The Resurrection, Turning Negatives into Positives

Writer: Matt HernandoMatt Hernando

The apostles were saying that people can be raised from the dead. They said this can happen because Jesus rose from the dead. So the temple authorities arrested Peter and John. It was already evening, so they put them in prison until the next day. Acts 4:2b-3 NIRV

In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” 32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” 33 At that, Paul left the Council. 34 Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed.  Acts 17:30-34a NIV

“My friends, I am a Pharisee and the son of a Pharisee. I am on trial simply because I believe that the dead will be raised to life.” Acts 23:6b CEV

But tell me this—since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead? 13 For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 15 And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. 16 And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. 18 In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! 19 And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. 1 Corinthians 15:12-19 NLT

Ø  BECAUSE THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST OCCURRED…

1.   Our message and faith go from useless babble to essential truth.

And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 1 Corinthians 15:14 NLT

2.   The Apostles’ message goes from deceitful “liars” to dependable martyrs.

And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:15 NLT

3.   The guilt of my sin is replaced by the forgiveness of sin.

And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. 1 Corinthians 15:17 NLT

4.   Departed believers go from eternally separated to eternally saved.

In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost!

 1 Corinthians 15:18 NLT

5.   Authentic believers are transformed from pitiful saps to enviable saints.

And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world.  1 Corinthians 15:19 NLT

Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your standBy this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.  For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas,[b] and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. 1 Corinthians 15:1-7 NIV

Ø  I CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE DEATH, BURIAL, AND RESURRECTION

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:37-38 NIV

Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 When we were baptized into his death, we were placed into the tomb with him. As Christ was brought back from death to life by the glorious power of the Father, so we, too, should live a new kind of life. 5 If we’ve become united with him in a death like his, certainly we will also be united with him when we come back to life as he did. Romans 6:3-5 GW
